The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are winning over hearts and minds on their first overseas royal tour together.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who wed in May, are travelling around Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga during their 16-day trip.

Australia has a strong republican contingent, and the young couple’s visit has been “widely seen as a charm offensive aimed at sometimes skeptical subjects”, says The New York Times.

It seems to be working. The excitement of their arrival in Sydney on Tuesday was compounded by the announcement that the Duchess is expecting a baby. Unsurprisingly, baby toys and books have proven a popular choice of gift to the royal pair from dignitaries and well-wishers.

The Duchess certainly won’t have time to shop for baby supplies herself for the time being. By the time the royal couple head back to the UK from New Zealand on 31 October, they will have completed 76 engagements, Metro reports.
