Notorious murderer Fred McClenaghan has died in hospital.

McCleanaghan (57) took ill in Magilligan Prison, where he was serving a thirteen-year sentence for murdering former partner Marion Millican.

It is understood he was being treated in the Royal Victoria Hospital and passed away there.

He was finally jailed in 2017 for the cold blooded shotgun murder of Mrs Millican.

The Co Londonderry man blasted his ex-partner in the chest at point blank range after going to the Portstewart laundrette where she had worked on March 11 2011.

McClenaghan had previously claimed that the killing of Mrs Millican was an accident committed as he botched his own suicide.

He was twice convicted and jailed for life for the killing before having the verdicts overturned on appeal.

In September 2017 he finally admitted that he murdered Mrs Millican and was handed a thirteen year sentence.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service confirmed that a 57-year-old man had died in custody.

Ronnie Armour, Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, said: “On behalf of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, I would like to extend my sympathy to the family of the prisoner.’’
