Police are investigating after a member of the public discovered a body on a beach in Northern Ireland.
The member of the public reported the find just before 5am on Thursday.
It’s thought the body was discovered by a man out walking his dog on the beach in Newcastle.
The promenade in the Co Down town has been sealed off. However, at this stage it is not thought the discovery is being treated as suspicious.
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath appealed for information to be passed to the police.
The MLA for South Down said: “My sympathies go out to the family of the individual, as well as the locals who found the body this morning.
“The local community are in shock this morning, but I have no doubt they will rally together to support one another at this time.
“I would encourage anyone who may have information to contact the PSNI.”
A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man’s body on the beach in Newcastle.
“The body was found by a member of the public shortly before 5am.”
