A Belfast councillor has apologised for comments made in the immediate aftermath of a fatal shooting in Belfast.

A man was killed in an attack in Glenbawn Avenue in Poleglass on Tuesday evening at around 8pm.

It is understood a gunman entered a house in the area with a shotgun before opening fire on the resident in the living room.

The PSNI said the victim was in his late 20s.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, SDLP councillor Brian Heading blamed in part the political vacuum.

“Obviously I condemn the attack, but it has to go deeper than that and I condemn the two main parties for creating the political vacuum that exists,” he said.

He later moved to clarify his remarks and apologise.

“It was poor use of language,” he tweeted.

“My intention was not to blame political parties but to instead press for political leadership to unite so we can work together to keep our communities safe and stop criminals.”
