Prosecutors in New York have filed a lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein and the Weinstein Company, following a four-month investigation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

Announcing the lawsuit in New York yesterday, Schneiderman said the investigation found “vicious and exploitative mistreatment of company employees”, and “egregious” violations of state civil and humans rights laws.

The lawsuit, which also names Weinstein’s brother Robert, alleges a number of examples of misconduct, including verbal threats to kill employees and demands for sexual favours in return for promotion within the company.

CNN reports that the lawsuit comes at “a critical time for The Weinstein Company”, which has been battling bankruptcy and is currently in negotiations for the sale of the company’s assets.

Lawyers for Harvey Weinstein said that any “fair investigation” would find that many of the allegations against the former studio boss would be “without merit”, according to the BBC.

“While Mr Weinstein’s behaviour was not without fault, there certainly was no criminality,” Weinstein attorney Benjamin Brafman said.
