Investigations are ongoing into a vehicle collision in County Wexford in which four people were killed while on their way to a funeral.

The victims, a family from the US, have been named locally as Lily Ryan-Alexander and her husband Doug Alexander, along with their sons Doug Jnr and Steve Alexander.

It is understood that the family were travelling to the funeral of a relative when the collision happened.

Gardai say a car and a lorry collided on Monday evening near Lacken, New Ross on the N25 at around 6.30pm.

The family died at the scene of their injuries, the Garda said.

It is thought they had travelled from Illinois in the US to attend the funeral of Mrs Ryan-Alexander’s sister Winnie Keevey in Wexford and were travelling to Ms Keevey’s wake when the collision occurred.

Local priest Fr Sean Devereux told RTE: “The community is absolutely numbed by the tragedy and all that has unfolded.

“All we can really do, as a faith community, is offer support and to be with those who are bereaved and be with the Keevey family who have had this tragedy impacted upon them as they were grieving the passing of their mother.”

He added: “It’s just unimaginable really to think.”

The road where the incident occurred remained closed on Tuesday while gardai continued to examine the scene.

Gardai have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
