Strachan’s competitive debut on the Scotland bench ended disappointingly, with this defeat to the Welsh leaving his side bottom of the table with no wins and just two points from five games.

Grant Hanley’s first half header had put the Scots in front but Aaron Ramsey equalised from the penalty spot before Hal Robson-Kanu headed in the winner.

Georgia 1-0 Scotland

4 September 2015

Sound familiar? In a repeat of the disastrous Euro 2008 qualifying result, Scotland were defeated in Tbilisi courtesy of Valeri Qazaishvili’s first half goal.

Poor defending and a lack of clear cut chances left the Tartan Army behind Germany, Poland and the Republic of Ireland in Group D as their hopes of ending their exile from a major tournament began to fade.

Scotland 2-2 Poland

8 October 2015

A must-win game at Hampden Park ended in familiar disappointment as a lapse in concentration saw Poland draw level with the last kick of the game.

Scotland had responded well to Robert Lewandowski’s early opener, with Matt Ritchie and Steven Fletcher scoring to put them in front. But the Bayern Munich striker’s late second meant a top-three place became impossible.

Scotland 1-1 Lithuania

8 October 2016

A calamitous result in week two of Scotland’s campaign and ultimately one that they would pay for.

Strachan ignored calls for Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths to start, instead opting for Chris Martin, and in the end the Scots required a late header from James McArthur to salvage a point from what was a must-win game.

Slovenia 2-2 Scotland

8 October 2017

Scotland needed a win and they couldn’t deliver. Strachan changed his shape and personnel from the team that had dramatically beaten Slovakia late on days earlier, bringing in Chris Martin and shifting to a 4-4-2 formation.

The Tartan Army were 45 minutes away from a play-off at half-time thanks to Leigh Griffiths’ opener, but a calamitous second half performance let the hosts back into the game and Robert Snodgrass’ 88th-minute equaliser was too little too late.
