SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan has condemned a “horrifying” late night abduction and attack on a man in Strabane.
“I completely condemn this disturbing attack committed against a 22-year-old man last night. This man has been left seriously injured by those who think they can take the law into their own hands,” said the West Tyrone representative.
“Strabane has witnessed a spate of attacks on individuals and families in recent months, which is completely unacceptable. The message must be put out there, and it must be clear, that these attacks have no place in our society.”
Detectives in Strabane earlier confirmed that they are investigating after a man was abducted and beaten by a gang of men.
The 22-year-old victim was walking in the Carlton Drive area of the town at around 11pm Thursday when the attack happened.
A grey van stopped next to him and he was pulled inside, had a hood placed over his head and his hands and feet bound.
The van was then driven out of the town before being stopped and a vicious assault being carried out on the victim by a number of men.
He was then driven back to the town and left in the Bradley Way area just before midnight.
Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said: “The victim sustained some serious injuries during this ordeal including a large gash to the head and a suspected broken arm.
“While the injuries are not life threatening, this was a horrifying attack that will have had a major impact on the victim and his loved ones.
“I am appealing for community help in identifying the perpetrators of this crime. There can be no justification for criminal groups carrying out such brutal attacks, attempting to control communities through fear and violence.”
Detective Sergeant Reid, who is leading the investigation, encouraged members of the public to contact detectives on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference number 1532 with the date 10/08/2017 or by contacting independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
